The Scouts BSA 10 Essentials

It is crucial to be prepared for any situation that may arise while at a Troop activity.  Here are the 10 essentials a Scout should bring with them in addition to the materials listed above..

  1. Navigation: Scouts should bring a map and compass to navigate the camping area. This can help them avoid getting lost or disoriented.

  2. Sun Protection: The sun can be intense while camping, and a Scout should bring sun protection, including sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.

  3. Extra Clothing: Depending on the camping season and location, a Scout should bring additional clothing like extra socks, a shirt, or a warm jacketg. This will help them adjust to changing weather conditions.

  4. Illumination: A Scout should bring a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries to help navigate around the campsite at night or in low light conditions.

  5. First Aid: Accidents can happen while camping and a Scout should be prepared with a first aid kit. This should include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.

  6. Fire: Scouts should bring waterproof matches or a lighter and a fire starter to start a fire for warmth and cooking.  (Scouts must first earn the Firem’n Chit before they can make a fire at camp.)

  7. Pocket Knife:  This is a multipurpose tool that can help Scouts with hundreds of tasks around camp and on a hike.  Scouts must first earn their Totin’ Chip to be able to bring knives on campouts.

  8. Food: A Scout should bring enough food and water for the duration of the camping trip. Non-perishable food items like trail mix or granola bars are great options for camping.

  9. Hydration: Water is essential for staying hydrated while camping. A Boy Scout should bring a water bottle or hydration pack to ensure they have enough water throughout the camping trip.

  10. Rain Gear: You never know when a rain storm will hit.  Scouts should bring a rain jacket or poncho with them to keep themselves (and their gear) dry.

Scouts spend a lot of time outdoors, so it is essential to be prepared with the 10 essentials for a safe and enjoyable trip. By bringing navigation, sun protection, extra clothes, illumination, first aid, fire, rain gear, nutrition, hydration, and a pocketknife, a Scout can have a great experience while staying safe and prepared for any situation.
