Scouting Scholarships

The Troop 457 Scholarship program provides a way to encourage full participation in our program regardless of the Scout’s financial situation. The Troop has always “made it work” however the scholarship program formalizes this process and give us the ability to quickly support Scouts without adversely impacting the Troop’s financials.

Who is eligible?

Any youth who is currently enrolled in the program or wishes to enroll in the program is eligible for a scholarship. We ask that scholarship recipients:

    • Have a legitimate financial need
    • Be active in the Troop
    • Participate in the Troop’s fundraising activities.

The Committee Chair and Scoutmaster are ultimately responsible for determining eligibility for this program.

What can the program be used for?

The program can be used to pay for uniforms, gear, participation in activities, or anything paid for out of the Scout account. (This excludes Eagle Scout Project funding as the Scout is required to handle this as part of their project.)

Funding the Program

The program will be funded through two primary mechanisms (in order of priority):
  1. Forfeited Scout Accounts
  2. Pledges from Friends of the Troop

Forfeited Scout Accounts
When a Scout leaves the Troop (either by not renewing or by aging out), funds in their Scout account cannot be refunded to their families due to IRS rules. Scout Accounts with a positive balance are transferred to a special Scholarship Account that can be pulled from by this program.

The Troop Committee is authorized to cap this account at a specific dollar amount or to approve pulling funds from this account with a majority vote of registered adult leaders.

Pledges from Friends of the Troop
The Troop will periodically contact friends of the Troop to solicit pledges to support Scouts in the program.Β No funds are gathered as a part of this process; instead, the Troop will contact an individual who pledge there support when we have a Scout in need.
