About Lesson

The Scouts BSA Handbook has a special Service Log section (starting on page 466) for tracking a Scout’s service hours.  After a Scout has completed their service hours, they should fill in the Type of Project, Date, and Hours fields in the log.  The Scout should then request the Scoutmaster or other Adult Leader sign the Scoutmaster or Adult Signature field.

You should be prepared to provide evidence that you completed the service hours if you’re asking a leader to sign-off for service hours where they were not present.  Evidence may include:

  • A note from the individual/organization you are providing service to indicating the number of hours work
  • Photos showing you working

Pro Tip:  You cannot use service hours more than once to complete rank requirements.  Consider writing a note in the service log to remind you of which hours you have used for specific rank requirements.

An Advancement Coordinator or another adult leader will make sure the service hours are accurately tracked in TroopTrack for reporting purposes.
