About Lesson

Scouts can LEARN the skills needed to complete rank and merit badge requirements at any time.  Scouts in the Troop often work to teach each other the skills needed for rank advancement during Troop meetings, but this is not the only place that learning can be done.  Scouts can also learn:

  • By reading, researching, and practicing on their own
  • From a family member or friend
  • In school

The important thing is learning the skills, not where they are learned.

The next two three steps of Scout Advancement (Test and Review) are typically done at Troop meetings or events.  Scouts can demonstrate the skills they have learned to individuals approved to sign off on requirements during Troop Meetings, at Campouts, or even on hikes.  Boards of Review can also be held during these times as long as enough adults are present to act as the board.

The final step of Scout Advancement (Recognize) is done during Courts of Honor (typically held quarterly).
