About Lesson

The purpose of a Board of Review is to determine the quality of the Scout’s experience and decide whether the requirements for the rank have been fulfilled. If so, the board not only approves the Scout’s advancement but also provides encouragement to continue the quest for the next rank. Boards of Review are not a retest, β€œexamination,” or a challenge of the Scout’s knowledge. Instead it should be a celebration of accomplishment.

Boards of Review are required for all Ranks EXCEPT the Scout Rank.

What to Wear and Bring to a Board of Review

Scouts should bring their Scouts BSA Handbook to their Board of Review.  They are also encouraged to wear their full Class A uniform and to be prepared with any gear needed to demonstrate the skills they’ve learned since becoming a Scout.

How to Schedule a Board of Review

Scouts may request a Board of Review at any time when they are confident the requirements for their rank have been achieved.  Adult leadership will do their best to accommodate requests in a timely fashion.

It is strongly encouraged that Scouts request a Board of Review at least one week in advance since these meetings require multiple adults to participate.  This can be done in person at a Troop meeting or by submitting a form on the Troop website.

The Decision

At the end of the Board of Review, the Scout should be asked to step out for a few minutes. The Board will discuss the Scout’s achievements to determine whether they should be awarded the rank.   Once a decision has been made, the Scout will return to the room to be congratulated. In the (hopefully) rare situation where it is determined that the Scout hasn’t completed all of the requirements, the Board will explain specifically what still needs to be done and offer plenty of encouragement.
