About Lesson

The Troop’s activity calendar is determined during the Annual Planning ConferenceDuring this conference, the Scouts determine whether to participate in traditional Troop or Council activities throughout the year.  Below are some common annual activities that the Troop can choose to participate in:

  • Scout Sunday (February) is a worship service at English Lutheran Church (our Charter Organization) in which we celebrate the birthday of the Boy Scouts of America, demonstrate how a Scout is Reverent, and say thank you to the congregation for supporting our Troop since 1940.
  • Klondike Derby (Winter) is a camping event hosted by Moraine Trails Council during the winter months and is based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush. A typical Klondike derby consists of several stations where patrols/units must test their Scoutcraft skills and their leadership abilities, earning points towards a total score. Often, one or more races are included while the Scouts navigate between stations.  The unit must transport their gear on a homemade sled pulled by the Scouts. Districts may have specific guidelines for the construction of sleds.
  • First Aid Meet (Varies) is an event hosted by Moraine Trails Council that allows Scouts to demonstrate their first aid skills.  Troops in the council compete for trophies.
  • Porkypine Campout (April) is a Troop event where we camp at a cabin in the Allegheny National Forest during a mentored fishing weekend (youth can fish in a stocked stream without a fishing license).  We typically cover the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops training at this event.
  • Crossover Campout (May) is a Troop event where we work to get our newly crossed over Scouts baseline Scout skills they will need for future campouts.  This includes learning how Troop campout works and earning their Totin’ Chip (grants a Scout the right to carry and use woods tools) and Firem’n Chit (grants a Scout the right to carry matches and build campfires.).
  • Summer Camp Swim Test (Before Summer Camp) is a short activity hosted at a local pool where Scouts can complete the BSA Swim test requirements before Summer Camp.  Scouts who do not complete the swim test must complete it at Summer Camp or will be considered non-swimmers with limited aquatics activities.
  • Summer Camp (Summer) is when the Troop attends a week-long summer camp at a BSA summer camp accredited by the National Camp Accreditation Program standards.
  • REBEL Campout (October) is an event hosted by Troops 457, 399, 403, and 404 at Moraine State Park.  This is also the campout where Scouts working on their Arrow of Light rank in our Cub Scout Pack join the Troop to experience a Troop campout.
  • Thanksgiving Feast (November) is a Troop event hosted at a local summer camp where the Scouts prepare a full Thanksgiving meal for our families.
