SPOTLIGHT

Scouts can take a deep dive into almost 140 specific subjects through the BSA’s Merit Badge program.  There they learn more about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers.  Scouts are required to earn 14 required merit badges and 7 other merit badges to become an Eagle Scout.

While Scouts will earn most of the Merit Badges at Summer Camp or through group instruction at Troop Meetings, that's not the only way they can earn these badges.

Troop Meetings focused on a specific Merit Badge
Many local Councils offer Merit Badge Classes or Universities whee Scouts can work on badges. (See the previous section for a list of upcoming sessions)
ON THEIR OWN! (If your Scout can find a group in which to earn a merit badge they're interested in, they can pursue it on their own. Mr. Maloney will provide them with a counselor in the area who will work with them, while following youth protection requirements, to complete the badge.)

The Advancement module of the New Member Bootcamp course provides more information about how Scouts can complete rank advancement, merit badges, and other awards.  Click the button below to learn more.
